I’m dying inside and all I see are demons

Materials/ Techniques; spray paint, wood, plaster mould, acrylic paint, fine liner, screen printing, glitter/gems.

‘I’m dying inside and all I see are demons’ is a project that was inspired by the current political climate. In the North of Ireland, we still do not have marriage equality (in 2018). I focused on the two outrageous and satirical characters that work in politics, Arlene Foster and Donald Trump. For this body of work, I decided to use text, for comedic effect and mixed media to stay true to the DIY and Queer art aesthetic.

Arlene Foster and Donald trump preach injustice and inequality. I decided to create a hyper-feminine space, adoring them in pink. I feel like this obnoxious, outrageous, and tacky aesthetic allows the political leaders to be presented in a satirical way, which mimics how a large majority of the public sees them.

The installation set-up was inspired by celebrating queerness and creating a safe space, using hand-made bunting and tacky wall art of vulvas, which is inspired by modern queer and feminist art. I chose to ironically depict Arlene Foster as a lesbian because she has openly spoken about her objectification of marriage equality. I created ambiguous sexual shapes to highlight how grotesque Donald Trump is, as well as exposing the controversies around his sexually abusive past.
